The Child remains Maria Montessori's definitive text and the best introduction to her pedagogical approach. It highlights the originality and modernity of the great Italian educator's ideas. In it, she clearly sets out the principles of an education based on "respect for the child's personality."
Helping children express their individuality and reveal their potential, giving them the means to develop the best of themselves while respecting their nature, for themselves and in the service of all, such is the role of the educator and such are the paths of new pedagogies. This project has continued, for more than a century, to inspire theorists and practitioners of education.
Until now, the French translation of this major work only offered the first two parts – already incomplete – of the original Spanish version; some paragraphs had been truncated, others moved, and the third part had been omitted. This new, complete edition offers eleven new, previously unpublished chapters on essential subjects such as intergenerational relations and children's rights. Desclée de Brouwer Editions finally offers this complete text to the French-speaking reader, in the presentation revised at the end of her life by Maria Montessori.
One of Italy's first female doctors, Maria Montessori (1870-1952) is world-renowned for the pedagogical and educational approach that bears her name. Her work, published in French by Desclée de Brouwer, is astonishing in its relevance and its ability to awaken and nurture the child in each person.
Translation and revision by Charlotte Poussin, AMI Montessori educator, author of reference works on Montessori and member of the board of directors of the Montessori Association of France.
