Sofia Cavalletti, the founder of a catechesis center in Rome, developed and perfected a method inspired by the insights of Maria Montessori, called the catechesis of the Good Shepherd.
His experience, which began in 1954, has developed over fifty years, with children from 3 to 12 years old, from different cultures and backgrounds. The religious potential of the child already mentioned in the youngest (3 to 6 years old) finds here, in the 6-12 year olds, its blossoming through direct access to the sources of the Judeo-Christian religious tradition: Bible and liturgy.
The child has spiritual needs inherent in his nature, which predispose him to receive the proclamation of faith as a response in harmony with his being and his aspirations. God is not for him a theological concept, but a presence that gives security and confidence. Taking up again at the beginning the questions of the first volume dedicated to the very young, Sofia Cavalletti develops the experience with older children, who can now engage in more complex cognitive processes, while continuing to focus on a few basic unitary themes. Among these, the love of God and the theme of the covenant, which we see unfolding in the biblical story as a supporting structure of the whole story, until reaching a cosmic dimension with the parousia.
A valuable aid for parents and catechists in the difficult task of educating in the faith
